The Jared Fogel Story
Everyone knows Jared Fogle!
Jared tipped the scales at 435 pounds while a student at
Indiana University. After unsuccessfully attempting numerous
diets, Jared grabbed a nutritional information brochure at
his local SUBWAY® restaurant and started a reduced calorie
diet by eating two SUBWAY® submarine sandwiches a day.
In a year's time, and by incorporating exercise into his
daily routine, Jared lost 245 pounds (111 kg). Since then,
Jared has appeared in numerous commercials for SUBWAY®
restaurants and has traveled throughout the world talking
about the importance of proper dieting and exercise. Earlier
this year, Jared embarked on the "Jared & Friends School
Tour" which is designed to teach children the benefits of
healthy living. Since it started, Jared has spoken to more
than 31,000 students. Jared has appeared on the "Oprah" show
and "Larry King Live," was the subject of a story on the CBS
news program "48 hours" and was featured in the Washington
Post, to name just a few.
Since Jared's commercials aired, the SUBWAY® corporate
headquarters has received thousands of letters, e-mails and
photos from people who have been inspired by Jared to lose
weight and live healthier lifestyles. In all, these people
have lost a total of 160,000 pounds! (To get an idea of how
much 160,000 pounds is, it is equal to: 14,545 skateboards;
10,000 Marching band Tubas; 1,568 sets of Encyclopedias; 842
Jareds; 492 Black Bears; 426 Gorillas and 184 Grand Pianos).
Now, Jared tells his remarkable story of being overweight as
a child and how he decided to take control of his life and
to eat right, exercise and get fit!

Diet Start Date: Mid-March 1998
Height: 6' 2''
Starting weight: 425 pounds (193 kg)
Current weight: 190 pounds (86 kg) |
Exercise during diet: At
first nothing, until he got down to about 300 lbs. Slowly,
he replaced riding the bus with walking to classes. By 250
pounds, he walked everywhere during the day. Typically 1.5
miles (2.4 km) per day.
Ending diet date: Early March 1999 (not quite a full year
from start date)
Diet today: Slowly started eating other foods. Chooses foods
with low fat. Eats a lot more calories (about 2,400 per
day), but now limits the fat. He drinks only diet drinks,
little liquor or beer and walks whenever he can.
Motivation: He stayed motivated with the help of his college
friend, JL (currently in medical school) and with the
support of his family.
Why SUBWAY® Sandwiches?: There is a SUBWAY® restaurant right
next to where Jared's apartment had been while he was at the
university. He passed by everyday. He used to eat there
frequently but one day when he was at his heaviest, he
noticed the sign advertising sandwiches with 7 sandwiches
with 6 grams of fat or less. He ate a 6-inch turkey (no oil,
mayo or condiments or cheese) for lunch and a 12-inch veggie
(no condiments or cheese) for dinner. He ate the same
sandwiches every day. This is what made it so easy. Once he
saw the *weight begin to come off, it only made him want to
eat more of the low-fat sandwiches.* |
What he ate everyday
Breakfast - Coffee
Lunch - "I ate the 6-inch turkey, tons of vegetables, including hot
peppers and a bit of spicy mustard." He left off the mayonnaise and
cheese and had a bag of Baked Lays® potato chips and a diet soft
drink
Dinner - Footlong veggie sub - again no mayonnaise or cheese.
Maintenance: Today, Jared still enjoys his favorite SUBWAY®
sandwich, but has eased himself into eating other foods. He always
chooses foods low in fat and limits the amount of alcoholic
beverages. He still drinks only "diet" beverages and continues his
walking regimen.
